Best time to visit cusco

The absolute best time to visit Cusco and the surrounding Andean region is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This period offers the most favorable conditions for exploring all that this incredible destination has to offer.

Why is this the ideal season?

  • Pristine Weather for Exploration: You’ll be greeted with abundant sunshine and clear, blue skies most days. While daytime temperatures are pleasant (averaging 18-22°C or 64-72°F), expect crisp, sometimes cold, nights that can drop near freezing. Packing layers is essential for comfort!
  • Optimal Trekking Conditions: With minimal rainfall, all the legendary trails – from the iconic Inca Trail to alternative routes like Salkantay and Lares, as well as day hikes to Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake – are at their very best. Drier conditions mean safer, more enjoyable trekking experiences.
  • Vibrant Cultural Celebrations: This season is brimming with authentic Peruvian festivals. June is Cusco’s jubilee month, culminating in the magnificent Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) on June 24th, a truly spectacular cultural event. Peru’s Independence Day on July 28th also brings lively festivities.

What amazing experiences await you during this time?

  • Machu Picchu in its Glory: Enjoy the clearest views and best photographic opportunities at the breathtaking Inca citadel.
  • Unforgettable Treks: Conquer world-renowned trails with ideal weather conditions, creating memories that last a lifetime.
  • Immerse in Cusco’s History: Wander through the historic Plaza de Armas, explore the stunning blend of Inca and colonial architecture at Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), and marvel at the grandeur of the Cusco Cathedral.
  • Discover Ancient Ruins: Explore the impressive archaeological parks just outside the city, including Saqsaywaman, Q’enqo, Pukapukara, and Tambomachay, with comfortable walking conditions.
  • Experience Local Life: Stroll through the charming artisan quarter of San Blas, browse the bustling San Pedro Market, and connect with the warmth of the local culture.
  • Adventure Activities: Ideal weather also makes this the prime time for thrilling adventure sports like ziplining, mountain biking, and white-water rafting.

While the dry season is popular and requires booking tours and accommodations well in advance (especially Machu Picchu permits), the unparalleled beauty and perfect conditions make it the top choice for a truly unforgettable journey through the heart of the Inca Empire.
