Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay trek does not require a permit. However, all Salkantay treks include a visit to Machu Picchu, for which a permit is required. This tends to sell out quickly, so we check availability in advance as part of your booking confirmation process to ensure everything is in order for your trip.
The trailhead for Rainbow Mountain is about 3 hours from Cusco via Cusipata, and 3.5 hours via Pitumarca by car. Most tour groups will take you in vans or shuttle buses, stopping along the way. An alternative is to hike along the Ausangate route and reach Rainbow Mountain. It is a four-day, three-night hike along spectacular trails.
If you are considering getting to Rainbow Mountain before Machupicchu, remember that most travelers have likely arrived in Cusco primarily to go to Machu Picchu. So we strongly suggest pursuing Rainbow Mountain after your trip to Machu Picchu, not before. This will give your body a chance to adjust to the altitude better.
