Day 1

Highlights & Humantay Lake

Day 2

Conquer the Salkantay Pass

Begin your day with a leisurely morning and a hearty breakfast before tackling the most demanding part of your trek. Ascend to the Salkantay Pass at 14,989 feet (4,570 m), where you can rest and build an apacheta, an Incan stone tower of respect to the sacred Apu.

Descend into the scenic Huamantay Valley, pausing for lunch at Huayracpampa. Continue a 4-hour downhill trek to Collpapampa for an overnight camp, with a well-deserved dinner after a challenging day.

Day 3

Scenic Trek to Lucmabamba

The third day of the Salkantay trek offers a slightly easier hike, filled with breathtaking views and unique wildlife. After breakfast, you’ll hike along the Santa Teresa River, passing through forests, waterfalls, and plantations of coffee and fruit. The trail’s vegetation becomes increasingly lush and green as you progress.

Enjoy lunch along the way before reaching the Lucmabamba campsite after a 5 to 6-hour hike. End your day with a delicious dinner and a tranquil evening.

Day 4

Journey to Aguas Calientes

Begin your day with a scenic ascent through lush forestland, reaching the recently uncovered Llactapata archaeological site. From here, savor the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and Salkantay Mountain.

Continue your hike, descending toward the Aobamba River until you reach the hydroelectric plant, where you’ll catch a train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at your leisure, either relaxing or exploring the charming town.

Day 5

Discover Machu Picchu

Begin your day early and head to the bus station for a scenic drive up to the hidden Inca citadel nestled atop a mountain amid cloud forests. With your guide, explore the key areas of this remarkable site, including the urban, agricultural, and adjacent zones. Highlights include the Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana, and the Principal Bath.

For those seeking extra adventure, tackle the challenging climb up Huayna Picchu for a unique vantage point of Machu Picchu. Note that tickets, limited to 400 per day, must be purchased in advance.

In the afternoon, return to Cusco via a comfortable train. Alternatively, choose to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes.
